John Tripp
Chief Deputy of Emergency Operations
Los Angeles County Fire Department

"Major Incident Case Reviews:  Overview, Command Concepts & Lessons Learned"

In this presentation, Chief Tripp will review two major incidents which occurred in the Los Angeles area: 1) the 2007 Summit Fire (Interstate 5 Tunnel Crash) where Chief Tripp was the IC, and 2) the 2008 Metrolink Train Derailment where he served as the Agency Representative for L.A. County Resources and assisted the City of Los Angeles Fire Department with Medical Aircraft needs, Technical Rescue Teams and Heavy Equipment resources.  Both of these incidents involved significant numbers of personnel, a wide range of LACoFD resources and special operations components, a substantial EMS response need, and critical initial actions by first-arriving unit and command officers.

Chief Tripp will analyze the response to these incidents in a half-day multimedia presentation, discussing the challenges, the successes, and the overall management of the events, and he will bring real-world, first-hand tips on how any unit officer or field operations chief can better prepare to deal with a dynamic, large-scale incident.

"How to Read Tea Leaves:  Situational Awareness"

This presentation examines the question, “How do we teach situational awareness and heightened sensitivity to environmental threats and risks both on the fireground scene and in the Chief Officers world?” Aviators and warriors often are taught situational awareness in flight and battle.  However, do we teach our firefighters these same skills for survival?  The presentation will expand on how these same skills allow a Chief to navigate and successfully survive the potential landmines of politics, budgets, labor management relations and other roadblocks to organizational success.

"The Fire Station Pyramid of Success:  How to Achieve and Maintain a Legacy of Personal and Professional Leadership Excellence"

You can choose to have a ‘championship’ fire station, crew, career, and life. All you’ve got to do is begin; choose to begin building your Fire Station Pyramid of Success. Fire station success has little to do with your arm patch, your rank, years of service, the economy, how many fire fighters your department has, how many fire stations, or to your ‘combat’ experience. The success of your fire station (and your fire department) has everything to do with you. Based on the original Pyramid of Success developed by coaching legend John Wooden, the Fire Station Pyramid of Success will help you discover the ‘peace of mind that comes from knowing that you have done your best to become the best you are capable.’

" Lessons Learned - A Review of the Charleston Sofa Super Store Fire"

This course is based on the Charleston Sofa Super Store Fire which resulted in the loss of 9 brave firefighters of the Charleston, South Carolina Fire Department. It is based on the report submitted by the team assigned to review the fire by the City of Charleston. The course will cover the details of the fire and the lessons learned from the tragedy. It will discuss key aspects of the fire, the cultural development of the Charleston Fire Department, the fire prevention elements that are directly connected to the loss of firefighter lives and the operational lessons learned. It is the hope of the presenter that members of the audience will take one or more of the lessons learned from this fire and its tragic consequences to make their department a safer place. An emphasis will be placed on the concept that we are all responsible for everyone going home.
