This evolution demonstrates that even a little water - correctly
applied to the seat of a fire will have significant
impact. Here a 2.5 gallon pressurized water extinguisher
is used to attack a moderate fire. Note the the behavior
of the fire in its growth stage - including rollover. Also
note that the rollover immediately dissipates as soon as the
source of the flammable gases (the seat) is hit. Although
the limited amount of water was not enough to completely
extinguish the fuel used in this evolution, it certainly knocked
the bulk of the fire down. Now, imagine nozzles
discharging 150 GPM and up used on similar fires. Lesson?
If the fire in a moderate sized structure is not being affected
by the application of water, look for a reason why. For
example, is the water being applied to the seat? Is the
fire being fueled by something other than the combustibles in
the structure (i.e.: natural gas)? Remember, streams of
the sizes that we commonly use, if applied properly, should have
an immediate affect on most fires we deal with.
