This training evolution demonstrates the use of a smooth bore
nozzle in extinguishing a well-involved 12x15 foot unvented room
at the end of a hallway. In this particular evolution the
firefighters were instructed to initially hit the seat of the
fire and stop. This was done to demonstrate that when
utilizing a direct attack, you must aggressively follow
up your initial attack or the fire will reestablish itself and
force you to begin again. After the fire regains its
control of the hallway, the firefighters demonstrate the proper
way to conduct such an attack by first hitting the seat of the
fire to reduce the rollover in the hallway, then advancing to
the room and knocking down the bulk of the fire. Notice
how the rollover in the hallway dissipates immediately when the
stream is directed at the seat of the fire in the room.
Also notice that the firefighters never lose visibility during
the operation. As you can see, after the knockdown, its a simple
matter of mopping up the remaining small fires in the room.
Lesson?: When an area is unvented, always utilize a
direct attack to avoid forcing steam and fire gases back
over the firefighters.
